
Religious School and Family Education at Beth Shalom
The goal of the Congregation Beth Shalom Religious School is to offer each child the opportunity to become an active participant in the Jewish community through understanding the rituals, customs, observances and ethical teachings of Judaism. We work in partnership with parents to create a foundation and love for lifelong Jewish learning and living with a core of Jewish knowledge and principals, including:
- Torah – an understanding and love of Torah and connection to God
- Hebrew –language skills for Modern and Siddur
- Jewish Values – as they apply to our lives through performance of mitzvot, and recognition of the Jewish value in everything we do
- Jewish Lifecycle – following Jewish calendar and holiday observance
- Jewish History – understanding the timeline of the Jewish people
- Tefilot – developing the skills and understanding the significance, history and spiritual meaning of prayers
- Israel – connecting to the history and culture of the Modern State of Israel
- Conservative Judaism – identity through youth and synagogue activities
- Customs and ceremonies – instilling the enjoyment and commitment of observation at home and in the community
- Music and Dance – infusing Jewish experiences with memorable moments and songs
Our targeted curriculum is age appropriate for students from PreKindergarten through seventh grade. All students attend classes on Sunday from 9-noon, and students grades 2-7 also attend Tuesday afternoon for two hours.
Teen Scene addresses the interests and lifestyles of students in grades 8-10 is open to all Jewish students in the community, and gives teens a chance to study different forms of Judaism and other religions as they prepare for Confirmation.
The Religious School also offers great programs and activities for students, adults and families, including:
- Musical Shabbat for families with young kids
- Family Havdallah and Game Nights
- Tzedakah Fair – to learn about opportunities to donate time and money in the community
- Mitzvah Day – a day of community-wide volunteering
- World Wide Wrap – learn to don tefillin
- Mitzvah EXPO and Seminars – Morning program for students and their families explain the rituals and traditions related to bar and bat mitzvah ceremonies, while the Expo brings event planning resources to Beth Shalom – Open to the community
- CBSchool Report – a weekly newsletter with updates from the school, a summary of the parasha (weekly Torah portion) and discussion questions for the family
- Student/Parent lifecycle class for seventh graders
- Shabbat workshop for famiiles
- Purim Carnival
